Blue Earth County Sheriff’s officials say a multi-snowmobile accident Monday night seriously injured one man and sent another to the hospital.
Lieutenant Tony Adams said four snowmobiles were crossing a field in Beauford Township at speeds around 40 miles per hour when the lead sled driver, 28-year-old Shane Campagna of Madison Lake, came upon a deep and wide drainage ditch and was not able to stop. Adams said Campagna crashed into the far side of the ditch.
The rider of the second snowmobile, 28-year-old Alex Dickie of St. Peter, was also unable to avoid the ditch and crashed into the far side. Adams said two other snowmobiles were able to reduce their speed before they impacted the ditch.
Campagna was airlifted to the Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester with serious injuries and Adams said Dickie went to M.C.H.S. Mankato with suspected minor injuries. The two other riders were not injured.
Adams added that they were all wearing helmets at the time of the crash.
