A bill intended to replenish the state’s Disaster Contingency Fund with a $10 million transfer from the General Fund is headed to the state House floor after passing out of a key committee on a bipartisan vote Monday morning.

Democratic Representative Gene Pelowski of Winona said, “This issue should never be partisan, this should be when we are statespeople. This is the best way that this legislature has acted and it must continue to act that way.”

He explained, “What t this bill does is backfill the account, which was underfunded for the last few years, adds stability to the account and then puts it in a position where if it has to be accessed at least there would be funds in it.”

Governor Tim Walz urged lawmakers to take quick action, given the potential for serious flooding by the end of the month.
