Everybody loves doughnuts! Today is National Doughnut Day. One of two days actually. The fried dough is so popular there are two days to celebrate them. The National Day in June celebrates not just the doughnut, but also honors the Salvation Army “Lassies”. They were the women that served doughnuts to frontline soldiers during World War I.

It’s not clear where the doughnut came from. One theory says Dutch settlers brought the doughnut with them to North America. Makes sense, they are famous for their desserts. They’re credited for creating many American favorites including apple pie, cream pie, and various cobblers.

Ok, enough with the history lesson. Let’s get down to it, where do you go when you need a box for the office meeting or a quick breakfast treat? Who’s Mankato’s favorite doughnut shop? According to Yelp, the locals prefer Dunkin’ Doughnuts and Main Street Doughnut and Deli. Wooden Spoon Bakery made the list as did the bakery inside Hy-Vee. Where ever is your favorite take this opportunity to indulge on this yummy treat on its special day, National Doughnut Day!
