Today is National Nachos Day!  It’s the day that celebrates the snack enjoyed at Mexican restaurants, sports bars, and sporting events across the country. Basically, they’re chips and cheese. However, today you find them topped with everything from beef, pork, chicken, and then piled high with sour cream, guacamole, salsa, and more! The name “nacho” is named after the person credited for inventing the snack. The story goes that Ignacio “Nacho” Anaya created the first nachos back in 1943. He owned the El Moderno Restaurant in Piedras Negras, Mexico. One evening after the kitchen was closed, a group of US military wives stationed at Fort Duncan came to the restaurant. With his kitchen crew gone Ignacio improvised by cutting some tostadas cut into triangles. He tossed on some shredded cheese and jalapenos, then popped it into the oven. The snack was an instant hit that the Army wives who called it “Nacho’s Special.” And as they say…the rest is history and now the chip and cheese concoction can be found just about everywhere.

Now that you know what “day” it is, where can you find nachos in Mankato? A quick Yelp search online spits out a couple of Mexican places, La Terraza and El Mazatlan Authentic Mexican Restaurant as the “best.” The latter has 4 types of nachos on their menu. Pub 500, Flask, and even Applebee’s shows up on the list. That’s not surprising, just about every place has them on the menu. So where do you go when you’re up for sharing some nachos?
