BEC Receives 8.2 Million Dollars in Federal CARES Funding, Needs to Spend Those Dollars By December First

Blue Earth County has received eight-point-million dollars from the federal CARES act to be used for COVID-19 relief. County administrator Bob Meyer says they need to make decisions on how to use those funds quickly. "The big challenge with this money is we have to spend it by December first of this year," said Meyer. "So we have a small window to develop programs and get those working in the community." 25th Straight Day of Single-Digit COVID-19 Deaths in Minnesota, Hospitalizations and ICU Numbers Increase

Minnesota has now seen 25 straight days of single-digit COVID-19 deaths. MDH reported 4 COVID-19 deaths Tuesday, including 3 in long-term care. The daily report says hospitalizations increased. MDH says the ICU total increased 12 to 138 and other hospitalizations increased 25 to 156. Blue Earth County officials say there are currently 774 overall COVID-19 cases in the county. Of that total, three are currently hospitalized and one is in the intensive care. The county has reported four COVID-19 deaths.

Spring Lake Park Man Arrested After An Incident Near Garden City

A Spring Lake Park man was arrested after an incident last Wednesday. Blue Earth County court records say 63-year-old Terrance Smith was charged with threats of violence, fifth-degree assault, interference with a peace officer, and possession of marijuana. Authorities say Smith is accused of slapping a man in the face and threatening to shoot the man and witnesses near a property he owns near Garden City.

Morris Man Arrested After Sunday Afternoon Hit and Run

A Sunday afternoon accident has led to the arrest of a Morris man. Blue Earth County court records say 45-year-old Micah Zeltwanger was charged with driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident. Authorities say Sunday afternoon shortly before two p.m, a vehicle driven by Zeltwanger rear-ended another vehicle on Timberwolf Drive. The court reports said Zeltwanger left the scene of the accident before being apprehended a short time later. Authorities say officers spoke to Zeltwanger’s 9-year-old son who told them his dad hit the back of another car. The child was not hurt.

Mankato Man Charged With Possessing Pornographic Work

A Mankato man has been charged with eight counts of possessing pornographic work. Blue Earth County court records say 18-year-old Anthony Barnes was taken into custody earlier this month following an investigation. Authorities say four of the charges of possessing pornographic work were connected to photos of a minor under 13 and the other four were related to being a registered predatory offender. Court records say Barnes was also charged with two counts of distribution of electronic communication relating or describing sexual conduct to a child.

How Long Will It Take For the Mask Mandate To Have An Effect?

A statewide mask mandate is now in effect. Kris Ehresman with the Minnesota Department of Health was asked how long would it take to judge whether or not the mandate will be effective. "The mandate only started on Saturday so it will likely take a few weeks or more to really see the impact," said Ehresman. The executive order, which went into effect Saturday, requires face coverings in all indoor public places for everyone age six and up.

Two Roads Remain Closed Due to Flooding

City of Mankato officials says a portion of Bassett Drive, between Raintree Road and Trunk Highway 22, will remain closed until (Tuesday). The road was closed due to flooding from Saturday evening's torrential rainfall. MnDOT says Highway 93 south of Henderson to Highway 169 remains closed due to flooding on the Rush River until further notice.

BEC Reports 4th COVID-19 Death, Monday Lowest-Single Day COVID Death Total Since April 13th

Blue Earth County reported its fourth COVID-19 death on Monday. The Minnesota Department of Health says the person was a long-term care facility residents between 70-79 years old. It was one of two deaths reported by MDH. There has now been 24 consecutive days of single-digit COVID-19 deaths in the state. It was the lowest single-day death total in Minnesota since the state reported no deaths on April 13th.

New Ulm City Council Votes Against Allowing New Ulm Baseball Association to Host To State Amateur Baseball Tournament

The New Ulm City Council unanimously voted against allowing the New Ulm Baseball Association to host the State Amateur Baseball tournament at a special meeting Friday afternoon. The council had previously granted the Association permission to do so earlier this month. COVID-19 cases have doubled in Brown County since the original decision was made. New Ulm Baseball Association president Bob Skillings said the tournament will be offered to Springfield.

Heat Advisory in Effect Until 8 p.m. Saturday Night

A heat advisory will be in effect for the area until eight p.m. Saturday night. Caleb Grunski with the National Weather Service says if you have to be outside. "Drink plenty of fluids and take plenty of breaks," said Grunski. "Also check up on the vulnerable and older folks to see if they're ok." The National Weather Service says hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illness to occur.
