With Thanksgiving Day less than a week away, it’s time to start making plans for the big day. Besides the feast, what’s your “must-do” thing that makes the holiday complete?

Thanksgiving is a uniquely American holiday. The Pilgrims and local Native Americans celebrated the first in 1621. President Abraham Lincoln declared that the “fourth Thursday in November to be a national day of thanks” on October 3rd, 1863. The holiday ranks second only to Christmas as the nation’s favorite.

What is your one thing that must happen to make your holiday best? Is it your family’s annual “Turkey Bowl” game? The family gathered around a table playing board games? Is it watching football or the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade? Speaking of, one of my mother’s “bucket list” things was to attend the parade in person. In 2014, we made her wish a reality as her, my stepfather, and my son made the trip to New York City to take in the skeptical. There was reserved front row seating behind our hotel for guests and we were treated to the parade in a cool up-close fashion. It’s a trip my son and I will never forget.

No matter what your “must-do” thing is, what’s most important is the time spent with family and friends. I hope your holiday is truly special this year! “Happy Thanksgiving” everyone!
