Opening statements in the manslaughter trial of former Brooklyn Center officer Kimberly Potter are set for Wednesday. The defense contends that Potter mistakenly grabbed her gun instead of her Taser when she shot and killed 20-year Daunte Wright last April. Former U-S Attorney for Minnesota Tom Heffelfinger says that’s a good defense because it appears to fit the facts, however…

“It’s not a good defense in that she was a very experienced officer and had been well trained, and she was in fact a training officer, and the jury could reasonably says “how could she make such a stupid mistake?”

Potter has pleaded not guilty. 14 people have been seated on the jury, with two serving as alternates.
